Yesterday afternoon I mentioned I was bummed we weren't getting 24 inches like Chicago and felt the media was hyping up the "biggest blizzard of the decade".
Fast forward a few hours. 9:30pm. Katie wakes up and she's burning up. (Side note: she'd had a fever since early afternoon. It was around 102.5 when we gave her a lukewarm bath at 6:15pm, a dose of pain reliever and put her to bed.) We took her temp and it was 105.5 with the pain reliever! We stripped her down and put her back in the tub as I called the doctor to find out her recommended cocktail of meds to get the fever down quickly. Unfortunately, the on-call nurse said with a fever that high, we needed to go to the hospital. In the blizzard.
So we packed up the girls, food and blankets...hey, you never know! and set out for the hospital. They ran a bunch of tests, took some chest xrays and gave her meds to get her fever down. The diagnosis: a virus. She's doing better today. Not eating much and still not herself, but feeling good enough to fight with her sister.
We've officially "dug out" and Alex has been at work since 9am despite the fact a snow emergency has been declared and the weather service is declaring this a civil disaster (complete with scrolling captions on the tv saying "do not go out. If you become stranded, emergency vehicles and personnel may not be able to help you.). It's 11:30am now, and most the neighborhood is beginning to "wake up". Moms and dads are shoveling and the kids are playing outside. I'm tempted to get the girls bundled up so they can play in the mountain of snow on our court. (Who needs fever reducer when you can play in the frigid temps outside, right?!) Something tells me we'll probably sit this one out for today. There will be plenty of time to play in the snow in the days and weeks ahead as I'm pretty sure the 17+ inches won't be melting anytime soon.
So, the moral of the story: next time I'm wishing for 24+ inches of snow and bashing the news reporters for "hyping" the story, remind me about "Snowpocalypse 2011" and our little late night trip to the emergency room smack in the middle of the "blizzard of the decade". Take it from me, it really was a blizzard and 17+ inches suits me just fine.
